Nursery Friends
Friends volunteer their time on a regular basis to help team members to reconnect with nature, build confidence, engage with people and reap the benefits of therapeutic horticulture.
While great people skills and a passion for plants and gardening are beneficial, our Friends don’t need specialist knowledge – just an open heart, willingness to learn and a belief in the power of plants and people working together.
By Getting Involved, Friends Will:
Use and develop their customer service or horticultural skills.
Raise the profile of Plants and Minds, and in some cases, generate income.
Join an enthusiastic, motivated team and make new friends.
Be first to see all our fantastic plants and hear about our events.

All Friends Are Asked To:
Respect and uphold the values of Plants and Minds while volunteering.
Complete induction and training required, and any role-specific training.
Adhere to relevant policies and processes including safeguarding, health and safety and equality and diversity.
Get to know Health & Safety and evacuation policies.
Undertake a standard DBS check.

Ways To Help
Retail - Shop Friend
Do you enjoy a bit of retail therapy? Our Retail Shop Friends love helping customers and telling them about how our charity supports at-risk adults with mental health challenges.
It’s important to make every customer feel welcome and answer their questions about plants and gardening. You’ll be selling products and processing sales through the tills, as well as keeping the shop clean and tidy, re-stocking and pricing.
Retail – Plants Friend
Are you knowledgeable and enthusiastic about plants? Our Retail Plants Friends love looking after the plants we sell and helping customers to find perfect plants for their gardens.
You’ll welcome customers and be able to answer their questions about plants and gardening, while promoting our charity by telling people about what we do.
A key part of the role is keeping plant retail areas clean and tidy, restocking from the nursery and making sure plants are priced up.
If you’re a great people person with a passion for customer service; love learning about plants and enjoy being outdoors in all weathers, this could be the perfect volunteering opportunity for you!
Nursery Friend
Do you love the great outdoors; enjoy physical activity and relish the opportunity to work outside regardless of the weather? If so, becoming a Nursery Friend could be right up your street!
Nursery Friends support vulnerable adults with everyday tasks, such as keeping the nursery tidy while ensuring plants are looking at their best, under the direction of staff.
Duties include dead-heading, weeding, top-dressing, tidying, caring for borders and moving plants between glasshouses and polytunnels. Nursery Friends help team members to get the best work experience, learn new skills and understand the importance of completing tasks.
The role would suit volunteers who are interested in learning about gardening or have skills they’re keen to share or develop – and ideally have an understanding about mental health.
Our Nursery Friends are positive, friendly and approachable; enjoy talking to people and working as part of a productive team, while being a friendly face for our vulnerable adults.
Event Friends
Our Events Friends help with everything from bucket collections to serving tea and cake at fundraising events.
If you enjoy raising money for good causes, and can be available on an ad-hoc basis to support fundraising events throughout the year – on-site or in the community – then this could be a perfect volunteering role.
Events Friends promote Plants and Minds by spreading the word about what we do and how people can support the charity, while helping events to run smoothly and safely.
The role would appeal to positive, friendly and approachable people who understand our mental health charity, enjoy talking to people and relish being part of a motivated team.
